What is it used for?
Etoricoxib is used to reduce pain, swelling and stiffness in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. It may also be prescribed for short-term treatment of acute gout pain and certain other acute pain conditions.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme called COX-2, which helps reduce the production of substances that cause pain and inflammation.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed. Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food. Do not take more than the prescribed amount or use it for longer than advised. Avoid taking other painkillers or anti-inflammatory medicines with it unless a doctor advises this.

Common side effects
Headache, dizziness, indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, swelling of the legs or feet, and increased blood pressure.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is a history of stomach ulcer or bleeding, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, kidney or liver problems, or allergy to painkillers such as aspirin or other NSAIDs. It may increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, especially with higher doses or prolonged use. Avoid during pregnancy, particularly after 20 weeks and in the last trimester, unless specifically advised by a doctor. Seek medical help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, black stools, severe skin reactions or facial swelling.
