What is it used for?
Metronidazole is used to treat certain bacterial infections, especially infections caused by bacteria that grow without oxygen. It is also used for some parasitic infections, including amoebiasis, giardiasis and trichomoniasis, and for conditions such as bacterial vaginosis and some dental infections.

How does it work?
It damages the DNA of susceptible bacteria and parasites, stopping them from growing and surviving. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with food if it causes stomach upset. Do not use leftover medicine or share it with others.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness, and a metallic taste in the mouth. Urine may become darker temporarily.

Precautions
Avoid alcohol while taking metronidazole and for at least 48 hours after the last dose. Tell the doctor if there is liver disease, a history of nerve problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if medicines such as warfarin are being used. Seek medical help for severe rash, numbness or tingling, seizures, confusion, or severe diarrhoea.
