What is it used for?
Hydroxyzine is used to relieve itching and other symptoms caused by allergies or skin conditions. It may also be prescribed for short-term relief of anxiety and tension.

How does it work?
It blocks histamine, a substance involved in allergic symptoms such as itching. It can also have a calming and sedating effect.

How to take/use it
Take it by mouth exactly as prescribed. Do not take more or use it for longer than advised. It may cause drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until its effects are known.

Common side effects
Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, blurred vision and tiredness.

Precautions
Avoid alcohol and check with a doctor before using it with sleeping tablets, sedatives or other medicines that cause drowsiness. Seek medical advice before use if there is heart disease, an irregular heartbeat, glaucoma, difficulty passing urine, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
