What is it used for?
Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg is an emergency contraceptive used to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, such as a broken condom or missed contraceptive pills. It is not intended for regular contraception and does not end an existing pregnancy.

How does it work?
It mainly delays or prevents ovulation, reducing the chance of fertilisation. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

How to take/use it
Use it as soon as possible after unprotected sex, following the instructions on the pack or advice from a pharmacist or doctor. The supplied strength is written as 1.5 gm; emergency contraceptive tablets are usually 1.5 mg, so confirm the strength before use. If vomiting occurs soon after taking it, seek medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, abdominal pain or cramps, headache, dizziness, tiredness, breast tenderness, vomiting, and temporary changes in the timing or amount of the next period.

Precautions
It may be less effective with some medicines, including certain medicines for epilepsy, tuberculosis and HIV, and some herbal products such as St John’s wort. Take a pregnancy test or seek medical advice if the period is more than 7 days late, unusually light, or if pregnancy symptoms occur. Seek urgent care for severe lower abdominal pain. It does not protect against future episodes of unprotected sex.
