What is it used for?
Itraconazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat fungal infections of the skin, nails, mouth, vagina and, in some cases, deeper parts of the body. The type and duration of treatment depend on the infection.

How does it work?
It stops fungi from making ergosterol, a substance they need to build and maintain their cell membranes. This helps stop fungal growth.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed. Take itraconazole capsules immediately after a full meal and swallow them whole with water. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach pain or indigestion, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness and skin rash.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, heart failure, pregnancy or plans to become pregnant. Itraconazole has important interactions with many medicines; provide a complete list of medicines, including antacids and acid-reducing medicines, before use. Seek medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe rash, breathing difficulty, swelling of the legs or sudden worsening of breathlessness.
