What is it used for?
Ivabradine is used to lower an elevated heart rate in certain people with chronic stable angina (heart-related chest pain) or chronic heart failure. It is prescribed when reducing the heart rate may help improve symptoms and heart function.

How does it work?
It selectively slows the heart’s natural pacemaker, reducing the heart rate without directly reducing the strength of heart contractions.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with food. Swallow the tablet with water and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Regular heart-rate monitoring may be recommended.

Common side effects
Temporary brightness or flashing lights in the field of vision, slow heartbeat, dizziness, headache, tiredness and raised blood pressure. Irregular heartbeat, including atrial fibrillation, may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about a slow or irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, heart rhythm or conduction problems, liver disease, or if a pacemaker is present. Seek medical advice for fainting, severe dizziness, worsening chest pain or a very slow heartbeat. Avoid grapefruit and inform the doctor about all medicines, especially those affecting heart rhythm or ivabradine levels. Ivabradine is generally not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised.
