What is it used for?
Labetalol is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It may also be used under medical supervision when blood pressure is dangerously high, including during pregnancy.

How does it work?
It blocks certain effects of adrenaline on the heart and blood vessels. This slows the heartbeat and relaxes blood vessels, helping to lower blood pressure.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with or immediately after food, and at the same time each day. Do not stop it suddenly without medical advice. If a dose is missed, follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Dizziness, tiredness, nausea, headache, and a slow heartbeat may occur. These effects may be more noticeable when starting treatment.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is asthma or other breathing disease, a slow heartbeat, heart block, heart failure, diabetes, or liver disease. Labetalol may mask some warning signs of low blood sugar. Rise slowly if feeling dizzy, and seek medical advice for fainting, breathing difficulty, swelling, or an unusually slow heartbeat.
