What is it used for?
Labetalol is mainly used to treat high blood pressure. It may also be used to control severely high blood pressure in hospital settings and high blood pressure during pregnancy, under medical supervision.

How does it work?
It blocks certain signals that make the heart beat faster and blood vessels tighten. This slows the heart rate and relaxes the blood vessels, helping lower blood pressure.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same times each day. It may be taken with or without food, but take it consistently the same way. Do not stop it suddenly without medical advice.

Common side effects
Dizziness, tiredness, headache, nausea, cold hands or feet, and a slow heartbeat may occur. Dizziness may be more noticeable when standing up.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision if there is asthma or other breathing disease, a slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, heart failure, diabetes, or liver disease. Labetalol can mask some warning signs of low blood sugar. Seek medical help for fainting, severe breathing difficulty, swelling, or an unusually slow heartbeat. If pregnant or breastfeeding, use it only on medical advice.
