What is it used for?
Levetiracetam is an anti-seizure medicine used to prevent and control epileptic seizures, including focal seizures and some generalised seizures. It may be used alone or with other seizure medicines, as prescribed.

How does it work?
It helps reduce abnormal electrical activity in the brain that can trigger seizures. Its exact action is not fully understood, but it affects a brain protein involved in the release of chemical signals between nerve cells.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same times each day. It may usually be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water and do not stop taking it suddenly, as this may worsen seizures. If a dose is missed, follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Sleepiness, dizziness, headache, weakness, nausea, and irritability or other mood changes may occur.

Precautions
Report severe irritability, aggression, depression, unusual behaviour, or thoughts of self-harm promptly. Use cautiously in people with kidney problems, as the dose may need adjustment. Avoid driving or operating machinery until the effects are known. Seek urgent medical help for a serious rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or other signs of an allergic reaction.
