What is it used for?
Levetiracetam is used to control seizures in people with epilepsy. It may help reduce different types of seizures, including focal and generalised seizures, as prescribed by the doctor.

How does it work?
It helps calm excessive electrical activity in the brain and reduces the likelihood of seizures. Its exact action is not fully understood, but it acts partly by binding to a protein involved in the release of chemical signals between nerve cells.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same times each day. The tablet may usually be taken with or without food and should be swallowed with water. Do not stop treatment suddenly, as this may worsen seizures. If a dose is missed, follow the instructions provided by the doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Sleepiness, dizziness, headache, tiredness, weakness, nausea, and irritability or other mood changes may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, depression, or previous mood or behaviour changes. Seek medical help for severe rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, unusual aggression, severe depression, or thoughts of self-harm. Avoid driving or operating machinery until the effects are known. Do not stop levetiracetam suddenly without medical advice.
