What is it used for?
Levofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It stops bacteria from making and repairing their genetic material, which kills the bacteria and helps clear the infection.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed. Swallow the tablet whole with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not take it at the same time as antacids or supplements containing iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc; follow the recommended time gap advised by the prescriber or pharmacist.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness and sleep disturbance.

Precautions
Tell the prescriber about kidney problems, heart rhythm problems, tendon disorders, seizures, nerve problems or a history of reactions to quinolone antibiotics. Seek medical help for tendon pain or swelling, numbness or tingling, severe or persistent diarrhoea, irregular heartbeat, severe allergic symptoms or unusual mood or nerve-related changes. Use during pregnancy, breastfeeding or in children only when specifically prescribed.
