What is it used for?
Atorvastatin is used to lower high cholesterol, especially “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. It also helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at increased cardiovascular risk.

How does it work?
It reduces cholesterol production in the liver by blocking an enzyme involved in making cholesterol. This helps remove excess cholesterol from the blood.

How to take/use it
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed, preferably at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food. Continue taking it as advised and do not stop without medical guidance.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, indigestion, diarrhoea, and muscle pain may occur. Contact a doctor if muscle pain or weakness is severe or persistent.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver disease, heavy alcohol use, thyroid problems, or a history of muscle problems. Many medicines can interact with atorvastatin, so provide a complete list of medicines and supplements. Avoid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless specifically advised. Seek medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe muscle pain, or unusual weakness.
