What is it used for?
Lithium carbonate is mainly used to treat and prevent episodes of mania and depression in bipolar disorder. It may also be used for other mood conditions only when prescribed by a specialist.

How does it work?
It helps stabilise chemical signalling in the brain and reduces extreme changes in mood. Its exact mechanism is not fully understood.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and at the same time each day. Do not change the dose or stop treatment suddenly. Maintain a regular fluid and salt intake, and attend all recommended blood tests. Do not take an extra dose if one is missed without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, fine hand tremor, increased thirst, increased urination, tiredness and weight gain may occur.

Precautions
Lithium requires regular blood-level monitoring because excessive levels can be dangerous. Tell the doctor about kidney, heart or thyroid problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any illness causing vomiting, diarrhoea, fever or dehydration. Several medicines can interact with lithium, including some painkillers such as ibuprofen, blood-pressure medicines and diuretics; check before starting any new medicine. Seek urgent medical help for severe tremor, repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, confusion, slurred speech, extreme drowsiness or unsteady walking.
