What is it used for?
Losartan 50 mg with hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Controlling blood pressure helps reduce the risk of complications such as stroke and heart disease.

How does it work?
Losartan relaxes blood vessels by blocking the action of a hormone that raises blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (‘water tablet’) that helps the kidneys remove extra salt and water from the body.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, usually at the same time each day. It may be taken with or without food and should be swallowed with water. Do not stop or change the medicine without medical advice. Regular blood pressure, kidney function and electrolyte checks may be recommended.

Common side effects
Dizziness, headache, tiredness, increased urination and a drop in blood pressure may occur. Changes in potassium or sodium levels can also occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, dehydration, gout, diabetes, or electrolyte problems. Do not use during pregnancy; seek medical advice promptly if pregnancy occurs. Avoid potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes unless advised. Some medicines, including painkillers such as ibuprofen, lithium and other blood-pressure medicines, may interact with it. Rise slowly if dizzy and seek medical help for fainting, severe weakness, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
