What is it used for?
Mefloquine is used to prevent and treat malaria, a serious infection spread by mosquito bites.

How does it work?
It kills the malaria parasite in the blood by interfering with processes the parasite needs to survive.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by a doctor. The dose and schedule depend on whether it is being used for prevention or treatment. Take it with food and plenty of water, and complete the prescribed course. Do not self-medicate or use it for unexplained fever.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, dizziness, headache, sleep disturbance, vivid dreams and tiredness.

Precautions
Mefloquine can cause serious mental, neurological or balance-related effects. Contact a doctor urgently for severe anxiety, depression, confusion, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, seizures, fainting, severe dizziness or palpitations. Tell the doctor about any history of depression, anxiety or other psychiatric illness, seizures, heart rhythm problems, or liver disease. Avoid driving or operating machinery if dizzy or affected by sleep or mood changes. Seek medical care promptly for fever during or after travel to a malaria-risk area, even if mefloquine has been taken.
