What is it used for?
Metformin 500 mg is mainly used to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines, along with a suitable diet and exercise plan.

How does it work?
It reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively. It usually does not cause low blood sugar when used alone.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet with water and do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, gas, reduced appetite, and a metallic taste. These effects may improve as the body adjusts.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there are kidney or liver problems, severe infection, dehydration, heavy alcohol use, or plans for an X-ray or scan using injected contrast dye. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, unusual sleepiness, or persistent vomiting. Long-term use may reduce vitamin B12 levels, so monitoring may be advised.
