What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with potassium clavulanate is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, such as infections of the ears, sinuses, throat, chest, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxycillin kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall. Potassium clavulanate helps amoxycillin work against bacteria that can otherwise resist it.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed and preferably with a meal to reduce stomach upset. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them for a future illness.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, indigestion and skin rash may occur. Thrush can also develop.

Precautions
Do not take it if there has previously been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxycillin, clavulanate or related antibiotics. Tell the healthcare professional about previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, liver problems or kidney problems. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, a severe skin reaction, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
