What is it used for?
Amoxycillin with clavulanate is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the ears, throat, sinuses, chest, urinary tract, skin and teeth. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Amoxycillin damages the protective cell wall of bacteria. Clavulanate helps protect amoxycillin from substances made by some bacteria that can otherwise make the antibiotic ineffective.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed by the doctor. If it is a liquid suspension, shake the bottle well before each use and measure the dose with an appropriate measuring device. Take it with food if advised, and complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share them with others.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and skin rash may occur. Taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, amoxycillin, or similar antibiotics. Inform the doctor about liver disease, kidney disease, or previous diarrhoea related to antibiotic use. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
