What is it used for?
Memantine is used to help manage symptoms of moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease, such as problems with memory, thinking and daily activities. It may help slow worsening of symptoms but does not cure Alzheimer’s disease.

How does it work?
It regulates the activity of a brain chemical called glutamate. This may help protect brain cells from excessive stimulation and support memory and thinking.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Swallow the tablet with water and do not stop treatment or change the dose without medical advice. If a dose is missed, do not take an extra dose unless advised.

Common side effects
Dizziness, headache, constipation, sleepiness, confusion, tiredness, vomiting and problems with balance may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, seizures, or difficulty passing urine. Seek advice before using other medicines, especially those that affect kidney function or urine acidity. Dizziness or sleepiness may affect activities such as driving. Medical supervision is important, particularly for older adults.
