What is it used for?
Memantine is used to help manage symptoms of moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease, such as problems with memory, thinking and daily activities. It may help slow worsening of symptoms but does not cure Alzheimer’s disease.

How does it work?
Memantine blocks excessive activity of a brain chemical called glutamate. This may help protect nerve cells and support memory and thinking.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. It may be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water, and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Dizziness, headache, constipation, sleepiness, confusion and increased blood pressure may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney problems, seizures, or bladder and urinary-tract problems. Memantine may cause dizziness or sleepiness, so take care when driving or using machinery. Inform the doctor about all medicines being taken, especially amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan or medicines that make the urine alkaline.
