What is it used for?
Meropenem injection is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, blood, and brain when caused by susceptible bacteria.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by preventing them from making the protective cell wall they need to survive. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, and response to treatment. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, and pain or inflammation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, other carbapenem antibiotics, penicillins or cephalosporins; kidney disease; or a history of seizures. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe skin rash, seizures, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use only under medical supervision.
