What is it used for?
Meropenem is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and other tissues. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the treating doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash and pain or inflammation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillins, cephalosporins or other antibiotics, kidney disease, seizures, or use of valproate medicines. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, seizures or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
