What is it used for?
Meropenem is an injectable antibiotic used in hospitals to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, blood, and brain. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Meropenem is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection, kidney function, and response to treatment. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, and pain or inflammation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillin, cephalosporins, or other antibiotics, and about kidney disease, seizures, or brain-related conditions. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, a severe rash, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty, or seizures. Use only under medical supervision.
