What is it used for?
Meropenem is a strong prescription antibiotic used in hospitals to treat serious bacterial infections, including severe infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and tissues, blood, or brain. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given as an injection into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, and the medical advice provided. It should not be self-administered.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, headache, rash, and pain, redness or swelling at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillins, cephalosporins or other antibiotics. Tell the doctor about seizures, brain or nervous-system problems, kidney disease, or pregnancy. Meropenem may interact with valproate medicines used for seizures. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, seizures, or severe or persistent diarrhoea.
