What is it used for?
Meropenem is a strong antibiotic used in hospitals to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin, blood, and brain. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by preventing them from making the protective cell wall they need to survive.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Use it only as prescribed and do not stop treatment early without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, headache, rash, and pain or inflammation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillins, cephalosporins, or other antibiotics. Dose adjustment may be needed in kidney disease. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, seizures, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Tell the doctor if taking valproate or other regular medicines.
