What is it used for?
Meropenem is a prescription antibiotic used in hospitals to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin, blood, and brain. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Meropenem is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose, timing, and treatment length depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. It should not be self-administered.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, headache, rash, and pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to meropenem, penicillins, cephalosporins, or other antibiotics; kidney problems; or a history of seizures. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, seizures, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Tell the doctor if taking valproate or other medicines, as interactions may occur. Use only when prescribed and complete the prescribed course.
