What is it used for?
Meropenem is a strong antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, blood, or brain. It does not work against viral infections.

How does it work?
It kills bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall, helping stop the infection from spreading.

How to take/use it
Meropenem is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse, usually in a hospital or healthcare setting. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, and medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, headache, rash, and pain, redness or swelling at the injection site.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about allergies to meropenem, penicillins, cephalosporins or other antibiotics, kidney problems, seizures, or nervous-system disorders. Tell the doctor about all medicines being used, especially valproate. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, seizures, or a severe skin rash.
