What is it used for?
Mesalamine is used to treat ulcerative colitis, a condition that causes inflammation in the large intestine. It helps reduce symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain and blood in the stool, and may help maintain remission.

How does it work?
Mesalamine acts locally in the lining of the intestine to reduce inflammation.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and follow the instructions on the product label. Swallow the tablet as directed; do not crush or chew it unless specifically advised. Do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion and diarrhoea.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about kidney or liver disease, stomach or intestinal problems, or allergy to mesalamine, aspirin or other salicylates. Medical monitoring may be needed during treatment. Seek urgent medical help for severe rash, breathing difficulty, chest pain, worsening bloody diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain or markedly reduced urine.
