What is it used for?
Metformin 1000 mg SR is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It may also be prescribed for other conditions only when specifically advised by a doctor.

How does it work?
It reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively, lowering blood sugar levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the sustained-release tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew or split it. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, gas, indigestion, reduced appetite and a metallic taste may occur, especially when treatment is started. Long-term use may reduce vitamin B12 levels.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about kidney or liver problems, severe infection, dehydration, heart failure or heavy alcohol use. Kidney function should be checked during treatment. Metformin may need to be stopped temporarily before certain scans using injectable contrast dye or during serious illness, as advised by a doctor. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, unusual sleepiness, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting or severe abdominal pain.
