What is it used for?
Metformin 500 SR is used to help control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines, along with a healthy diet and regular physical activity.

How does it work?
It reduces the amount of glucose made by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively, lowering blood sugar levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the sustained-release tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew or split it unless specifically advised. Do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, gas, vomiting, reduced appetite and a metallic taste. These effects often improve as the body adjusts.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about kidney or liver problems, heavy alcohol use, dehydration, severe infection or heart problems. Kidney function should be checked regularly. Medical advice may be needed before surgery or certain X-ray scans using an iodine-containing contrast dye. Long-term use may reduce vitamin B12 levels. Seek urgent medical help for severe weakness, breathing difficulty, unusual sleepiness, or persistent vomiting.
