What is it used for?
Metronidazole is used to treat certain bacterial infections, especially infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, and some parasitic infections such as amoebiasis, giardiasis and trichomoniasis. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It damages the DNA of susceptible bacteria and parasites, stopping them from growing and surviving.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet with water. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Avoid alcohol while taking metronidazole and for at least 48 hours after the last dose.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache and a metallic taste in the mouth. Urine may temporarily become darker.

Precautions
Do not use it if allergic to metronidazole or similar medicines. Tell the doctor about liver disease, nervous-system problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding. It may interact with medicines such as warfarin. Stop the medicine and seek medical advice if numbness, tingling, seizures or severe skin reactions occur.
