What is it used for?
Micafungin is an antifungal medicine used to treat serious Candida (yeast) infections, including infections of the blood and other internal organs. It may also be used for certain oesophageal fungal infections and to help prevent fungal infections in some high-risk patients, as prescribed by a specialist.

How does it work?
It blocks the production of an essential part of the fungal cell wall. This weakens the fungal cells and stops the infection from growing.

How to take/use it
Micafungin is given as a slow intravenous infusion by a doctor or nurse, usually in a hospital or clinic. The dose and treatment length depend on the type and severity of the infection. It should not be self-administered.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, fever, flushing, rash, and pain or irritation at the infusion site. Liver enzyme changes may also occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to micafungin or similar antifungal medicines, and about liver disease or other medicines being used. Liver function and blood tests may be needed during treatment. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a severe reaction during or after the infusion.
