What is it used for?
Mefenamic acid is used for short-term relief of mild to moderate pain, including menstrual cramps and other body pain.

How does it work?
It reduces the production of substances called prostaglandins that cause pain, swelling and inflammation.

How to take/use it
Take only as prescribed, preferably with or after food and with water. Use the lowest effective amount for the shortest time advised. Do not take it with other painkillers such as ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin unless advised by a doctor.

Common side effects
Stomach pain or indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, dizziness and headache.

Precautions
Avoid or seek medical advice before use if there is a history of stomach ulcer or bleeding, kidney or liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma triggered by painkillers, or allergy to NSAID medicines. Inform the doctor if taking blood thinners or other medicines. Avoid during pregnancy unless specifically prescribed, especially from 20 weeks onwards and in the last 3 months. Seek urgent medical help for black stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a serious skin rash.
