What is it used for?
Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic used to loosen thick, sticky mucus in the airways, making phlegm easier to cough up. It may be used for chesty or productive coughs associated with respiratory conditions.

How does it work?
It breaks down the structure of thick mucus, reducing its stickiness and making it easier to clear from the airways.

How to take/use it
Dissolve the effervescent tablet completely in a glass of water and drink it immediately. Take it exactly as directed on the product label or by a doctor. Do not swallow the tablet whole.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, headache, skin rash and indigestion may occur.

Precautions
Do not use if allergic to acetylcysteine. Use with caution if there is asthma or a history of stomach ulcers. Avoid taking it with cough-suppressant medicines unless advised by a doctor, as these may prevent mucus from being cleared.
