What is it used for?
Naproxen is used to relieve pain, swelling and stiffness caused by muscle or joint problems, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. It may also be prescribed for short-term pain, such as period pain or gout attacks.

How does it work?
It reduces the production of substances called prostaglandins that cause pain, swelling and inflammation.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with or just after food and a full glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole unless advised otherwise. Do not take more than prescribed or combine it with other painkillers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac unless a doctor advises it.

Common side effects
Indigestion, stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, headache, dizziness and drowsiness may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is a history of stomach ulcer or bleeding, kidney or liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma triggered by painkillers, or an allergy to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Seek urgent medical help for black stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain, chest pain, breathing difficulty or a severe skin rash. Avoid use during pregnancy unless specifically prescribed, especially after 20 weeks and in the last trimester. Check with a doctor before use with blood thinners, steroids, aspirin or other medicines that can irritate the stomach or affect the kidneys.
