What is it used for?
Naproxen is used to relieve pain, swelling and stiffness in conditions affecting the muscles and joints, including arthritis. It may also be prescribed for other short-term painful conditions, such as menstrual pain.

How does it work?
It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID). It reduces the production of chemicals in the body that cause pain, swelling and inflammation.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, preferably with or after food and with a full glass of water. Do not take more than recommended or combine it with other NSAID painkillers unless advised by a doctor.

Common side effects
Indigestion, heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea or constipation, headache, dizziness and drowsiness.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is a history of stomach ulcer or bleeding, kidney or liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma triggered by painkillers, or an allergy to NSAIDs. Avoid use during pregnancy unless specifically advised, especially from 20 weeks onwards and during the last trimester. Seek urgent help for black stools, vomiting blood, severe stomach pain, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, chest pain or a serious skin rash. Tell the doctor about blood thinners, steroids, aspirin, other painkillers, medicines for blood pressure, lithium or methotrexate.
