What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, including infections of the throat, ears, airways, urinary tract and other areas, when the bacteria are sensitive to it. It does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Swallow the tablet with water and complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. Do not share or reuse leftover antibiotics.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and headache. Skin rash may also occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor if there is an allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporins or penicillin-type antibiotics, or if there is kidney disease. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe skin reaction. Contact a doctor for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, including after finishing treatment.
