What is it used for?
Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as infections of the throat, ears, urinary tract and respiratory system, when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall, which is needed for bacterial growth and survival.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Complete the prescribed course, even if symptoms improve. It may be taken with or without food. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use them without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion and headache. Skin rash may also occur.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about any previous allergy to cefixime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or penicillin. Tell the doctor if there is kidney disease or a history of severe antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or a severe skin rash, or persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
