What is it used for?
Nicoumalone is an anticoagulant used to prevent and treat harmful blood clots. It may be prescribed for conditions such as irregular heartbeat, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or artificial heart valves.

How does it work?
It reduces the action of vitamin K, which the body needs to make certain clotting proteins. This makes the blood less likely to form harmful clots.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. Regular blood tests, usually INR tests, are needed to check its effect. Do not change the dose, stop treatment, or take a missed dose without medical advice. Keep vitamin K-rich foods reasonably consistent and inform the doctor about all medicines, supplements and herbal products.

Common side effects
Easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding from the gums, prolonged bleeding from cuts, heavier menstrual bleeding, nausea or stomach upset.

Precautions
Seek urgent medical help for heavy or unusual bleeding, vomiting blood, black stools, blood in urine, severe headache or a serious injury. Tell the doctor before surgery or dental treatment, and if there is liver disease, a bleeding disorder, stomach ulcer or a recent injury. Many medicines, including some painkillers and antibiotics, can interact with nicoumalone. Avoid starting aspirin or other blood-thinning medicines unless prescribed. It is generally avoided during pregnancy unless specifically directed by a specialist.
