What is it used for?
Ketoconazole 200 mg tablets are prescription antifungal medicine used to treat certain serious or difficult-to-treat fungal infections when other suitable treatments are not available or appropriate. They should only be used under close medical supervision because of the risk of liver damage.

How does it work?
It stops fungi from making ergosterol, a substance needed to build and maintain their cell membranes. This weakens the fungi and helps control the infection.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with food, and swallow it with water. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Tell the doctor about all other medicines being taken, including antacids and acid-reducing medicines.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, headache and changes in liver function tests may occur.

Precautions
Do not use it without medical supervision if there is liver disease. Seek urgent medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe tiredness, persistent vomiting or severe abdominal pain. Ketoconazole can cause serious liver injury, affect adrenal hormone production, alter heart rhythm and interact with many medicines. Medical advice is especially important during pregnancy, breastfeeding or when taking other prescription medicines.
