What is it used for?
Olanzapine is an antipsychotic medicine used to treat schizophrenia and episodes of mania associated with bipolar disorder. It may also be used to help prevent further mood episodes in bipolar disorder, as prescribed by a doctor.

How does it work?
It helps balance certain chemical messengers in the brain, especially dopamine and serotonin. This can reduce symptoms such as hallucinations, unusual thoughts, agitation and severe mood changes.

How to take/use it
Take it only as prescribed by the doctor, at the recommended time, with or without food. Do not stop it suddenly or change the dose without medical advice. Avoid driving or operating machinery until its effect is known.

Common side effects
Sleepiness, increased appetite, weight gain, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, restlessness and swelling of the hands or feet. It may also increase blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, seizures, liver problems or a history of stroke. Weight, blood sugar and cholesterol may need monitoring. Avoid alcohol because it can worsen sleepiness and dizziness. Older adults with dementia-related psychosis have an increased risk of serious side effects and death with this medicine. Seek urgent medical help for severe muscle stiffness with fever, uncontrolled movements, fainting or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
