What is it used for?
Olanzapine is an antipsychotic medicine used to treat schizophrenia and manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. It may also be used to help prevent these symptoms from returning when prescribed for ongoing treatment.

How does it work?
It helps balance the activity of certain chemical messengers in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin. This can reduce symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, severe mood changes and agitation.

How to take/use it
Use exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Take it at the recommended time each day and do not change the dose or stop treatment suddenly without medical advice. Avoid alcohol, as it may increase drowsiness.

Common side effects
Sleepiness, increased appetite, weight gain, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation and tiredness. It may also increase blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about diabetes, high cholesterol, liver disease, seizures, heart problems or a history of stroke. Weight, blood sugar and cholesterol may need monitoring. Seek urgent medical help for severe muscle stiffness, high fever, confusion, uncontrolled movements or fainting. Older adults with dementia-related psychosis have an increased risk of serious complications with this medicine.
