What is it used for?
Lactulose is mainly used to relieve constipation by making stools softer and easier to pass. It may also be prescribed by a doctor for certain liver-related complications.

How does it work?
It draws water into the bowel, which softens the stool and helps stimulate bowel movements. It is broken down by natural bacteria in the colon.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as directed on the label or by the doctor. Measure the prescribed amount carefully; it may be taken alone or mixed with water or another suitable drink. Drink enough fluids unless a doctor has advised fluid restriction. Do not take more or use it for longer than recommended.

Common side effects
Gas, bloating, stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhoea. Diarrhoea may occur if too much is taken.

Precautions
Do not use it if there is suspected bowel blockage or severe unexplained abdominal pain. Seek medical advice if constipation does not improve, or if severe or persistent diarrhoea occurs. People with diabetes or those on prolonged or high-dose treatment should use it under medical supervision, as fluid and electrolyte disturbances may occur.
