What is it used for?
Omeprazole reduces excess stomach acid and is used for acidity, heartburn, acid reflux (GERD), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It may also be used with antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori infection or to prevent ulcers caused by some painkillers, when prescribed.

How does it work?
It blocks the acid-producing pumps in the stomach, reducing the amount of acid released. This helps relieve heartburn and allows acid-related irritation or ulcers to heal.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as directed by the doctor or package instructions. It is usually taken before food. Swallow the capsule or tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew it. Do not change the dose or duration without medical advice.

Common side effects
Headache, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation and gas.

Precautions
Seek medical advice for difficulty swallowing, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood or black stools. Inform the doctor about other medicines, especially clopidogrel, warfarin, phenytoin, diazepam, some HIV medicines or methotrexate. Long-term use should be supervised, as it may affect vitamin B12 or magnesium levels and bone health.
