What is it used for?
Calcium acetate is used to control high phosphate levels in people with severe chronic kidney disease, including those receiving dialysis.

How does it work?
It binds phosphate from food in the digestive tract, reducing the amount absorbed into the blood.

How to take/use it
Take with meals exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Regular blood tests may be needed to monitor phosphate and calcium levels.

Common side effects
Constipation, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort and loss of appetite. Too much calcium may cause unusual thirst, weakness, confusion or irregular heartbeat.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. Tell the doctor about high calcium levels, kidney or heart problems, or use of calcium supplements or calcium-containing antacids. Calcium acetate can affect the absorption of some medicines, including iron, thyroid medicines and certain antibiotics; take other medicines only as directed.
