What is it used for?
Pioglitazone is used to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, along with a suitable diet and exercise. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines.

How does it work?
It helps the body's cells respond better to insulin, allowing more sugar to move from the blood into the cells. This helps lower blood sugar levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with or without food. Take it regularly and do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. Continue the recommended diet, exercise and blood sugar monitoring.

Common side effects
Weight gain, swelling of the ankles or legs, headache, muscle aches and symptoms of an upper respiratory infection may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when it is taken with certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about heart failure, liver disease, bladder cancer or blood in the urine before using it. Seek medical help for sudden weight gain, increasing swelling or breathing difficulty, as these may indicate fluid retention or heart problems. Liver function may need monitoring. Pioglitazone may increase the risk of bone fractures and is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Inform the doctor if pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.
