What is it used for?
Pioglitazone is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or with other diabetes medicines. It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

How does it work?
It improves the body's sensitivity to insulin, helping cells use sugar from the blood more effectively. This helps lower blood sugar levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor. It may be taken with or without food. Continue the recommended diet, exercise and blood sugar monitoring, and do not stop it without medical advice.

Common side effects
Weight gain, swelling of the ankles or legs, headache, muscle pain and symptoms of low blood sugar when used with other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor before use if there is heart failure, liver disease, bladder cancer or blood in the urine, or a history of bone fractures. Pioglitazone can cause fluid retention and may worsen heart failure; seek medical help for breathlessness, rapid weight gain or severe swelling. Liver tests and blood sugar monitoring may be needed. Discuss use during pregnancy or breastfeeding with a doctor.
