What is it used for?
Piperacillin and tazobactam is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It is usually given in a hospital or clinic.

How does it work?
Piperacillin kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall. Tazobactam helps protect piperacillin from enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to it.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein by a doctor or nurse. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the treating doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash and pain or irritation at the injection site may occur.

Precautions
Do not use if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, other beta-lactam antibiotics or any ingredient. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, bleeding or blood disorders, or other medicines being taken. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or unusual bleeding. Unnecessary use can promote antibiotic resistance.
