What is it used for?
Piperacillin with tazobactam is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. It is usually used in hospitals and does not treat viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
Piperacillin kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall. Tazobactam helps protect piperacillin from bacterial enzymes that can make some bacteria resistant to it.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by intravenous infusion by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. Complete the prescribed course unless the treating doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, skin rash and pain or redness at the injection site may occur. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, piperacillin, tazobactam or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney disease, bleeding or blood disorders, seizures, or previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Kidney function and blood tests may be monitored during treatment. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or blistering.
