What is it used for?
Piperacillin with tazobactam is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and other parts of the body. It is given when treatment with a broad-spectrum antibiotic is needed.

How does it work?
Piperacillin kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from forming their protective cell wall. Tazobactam helps protect piperacillin from enzymes made by some bacteria, allowing it to work against a wider range of infections.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse. It is usually used in a hospital or medical setting. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function; complete the prescribed course unless the treating doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, rash, itching, and pain or irritation at the injection site. Blood tests may show changes in blood counts or liver or kidney function.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to penicillin, other beta-lactam antibiotics, or any of its ingredients. Tell the doctor about kidney disease, bleeding or blood disorders, previous antibiotic-related diarrhoea, or allergies. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe skin rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Medical monitoring may be needed during treatment, especially with prolonged use or kidney problems.
